2000 PAX Index

The SFR Handicap Index ("PAX")

The PAX Index is a system of handicapping cars, so that drivers in different SCCA classes may compare times against each other. John Kelly tells us it was invented by Jim McKamey for a series of autocrosses he ran at one time, and is now updated each year by Dave Beck.

The PAX index for the fastest class (AM) is always 1.0. For any other class, multiply your time by the index for your class to get the time you theoretically would have run in an AM car.

PAX numbers are compiled primarily from the results of a series of midwestern events, though some attention is paid to the Solo II nationals.

2000 SFR Handicap Index

San Francisco Region uses the straight PAX index, with the addition of an entry for OSP (which is not a national class and therefore does not have a PAX index). We index OSP at .855 for people running in Rookie, Street Tire, and PAX classes, for example.

Modified  Prepared  Street Prepared  Stock
--    --    OSP .855  SS  .830
AM  1.000  AP  .872  ASP  .852  AS  .815
BM  .955 BP  .874 BSP  .847 BS  .812
CM  .924  CP  .857 CSP  .844 CS  .804
DM  .900 DP  .853 DSP  .819  DS  .799
EM  .908  EP  .873  ESP  .822 ES  .786
FM  .904 FP  .865 FSP  .817 FS  .807
          GS  .789
F125 .948 SM .846  STR .810  HS  .781

SFR runs SCCA Street Touring R as our "Street Touring" class.  When Street Touring runs in Street Tire, PAX, or Rookie class, it is handicapped using the STR index.  Why?  Because it is compared against cars in CSP, for example, whose index is also calculated using results of cars running R tires.
For your reference, the national PAX index for STS is 0.783.
